The London Accord is the result of a true collaboration. Key people have participated in this project since its inception and continue today to provide insight and expertise.


Alice Chapple

Alice Chapple heads up the financial services sector work at Forum for the Future, the sustainable development charity. She works with others in the sector to develop innovative financial instruments, more effective valuation techniques and enlightened strategies so that capital can increasingly be allocated to activities that support sustainable development. Alice has spent most of her career working in the emerging markets for CDC Group and Actis, as financial analyst, fund manager, and social and environmental advisor. Alice has an MA in Economics from Cambridge University and is a chartered accountant.

Alex Evans

Alex Evans is a Non-Resident Fellow at the Center on International Cooperation (CIC) at New York University, where he runs CIC’s work on climate change, resource scarcity and global public goods. Alex is currently setting up a new CIC research program to explore multilateral reforms needed to improve management of resource scarcity in fragile states and at the international level. He also edits GlobalDashboard.org, a blog on global risks and foreign policy. Prior to joining CIC in 2006, Alex was Special Adviser to the Rt. Hon. Hilary Benn MP, then UK Secretary of State for International Development, where he worked on issues including climate change, UN reform, governance in fragile states and the UK’s 2005 G8 agenda. Before joining DFID he was head of the climate and energy research program of the Institute for Public Policy Research in London.

Michael Mainelli

Professor Michael Mainelli FCCA FSI leads Z/Yen, the City of London’s leading think tank, since co-founding it in 1994 in order to promote societal advance through better finance and technology. Educated at Harvard, Trinity College Dublin and the London School of Economics and Political Science, Michael worked in the 1970’s as a scientist in aerospace and created and delivered the then largest computer cartography and environmental mapping project, Geodat, by 1984. Michael became a leading accountancy firm partner in the 1980’s and served on the board of Europe’s largest R&D organisation in the 1990’s. Michael is Professor of Commerce at Gresham College, non-executive Director of the United Kingdom Accreditation Service, a London Waterways Commissioner and a Trustee of the International Fund for Animal Welfare and Ocean Alliance.

Simon Mills

Simon Mills began his career by working as a field botanist on Cloud and Elfin rainforest in Northern Costa Rica. He subsequently worked as an Environmental Planner for a number of Local authorities in England and Wales before joining the City of London Corporation as Head of Sustainable Development in 2000. Simon holds a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Sciences, an MSc in Environmental Impact Assessment and a Masters in Public Administration. His professional interests range from carbon finance to international development. In 2002 he was responsible for the UK financial services submission to the UNEP Earth Summit. In 2009 he was seconded to Defra for six months in order to manage the Local and Regional Adaptation Partnership for England.

Jan-Peter Onstwedder

Jan-Peter Onstwedder is Head of Portfolio and Risk for 3i Group plc, responsible for valuations, risk managements and the management of environmental, social and governance issues in the investment portfolio. In 2007, he was Project Director for The London Accord. From 2001 to 2006, he was Head of Risk Management for the Integrated Supply & Trading division of BP plc, responsible for market, credit and operational risk. Prior to 2001 Jan-Peter was Head of Group Market Risk for The Royal Bank of Scotland. He was actively involved in the banking industry’s consultation with the Basel Committee for the market risk amendment and the initial phases of Basel II. Jan-Peter has an MBA from Kellogg, Northwestern University, Chicago and an MSc in mechanical engineering from Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands.
