Document summary

As global GDP has risen, so have GHG emissions, species loss and environmental degradation. The failure is due to political reasons. The world’s peoples remain focused on material living standards and leaders are reluctant to expend political capital on long-term global risk issues. Therefore there is a real risk that the Rio 2012 summit on sustainable development could be a damp squib. To avoid this sustainability need to be centre stage of debates on globalisation and the global economy focusing on three key areas: greening growth, equity in a world of limits and building resilience to shocks and stresses.
