Thirty companies in the mining and oil & gas sectors with total market capitalisation of US$2,545 billion are reviewed. Progress made by the sectors in addressing biodiversity issues, responses to emerging thinking on ecosystem services and the development of robust systems to manage risk and realise the opportunities associated with these issues are evaluated. Company responses are outlined, strengths and areas of common weakness identified and recommendations for improvements made. Further actions for investors, government and industry are offered. These suggestions are used by investors involved in the study in their dialogue with companies identified as underperforming within the analysis.
