Shareholder resolutions filed against public companies in the US and Canada on climate change and adaptation issues nearly doubled between 2010 and 2011. Investors want to understand the materiality of future climate change for their investment decisions. Their concern is fuelled by increased extreme weather events, observed impacts on the natural and built environment, improved scientific information on future climatic changes and associated impacts, and increasing government attention on adaptation. The briefing note takes stock of shareholder resolutions on climate impacts and adaptation filed in 2009-11 and analyses the implications for US and Canadian public companies.
