The December 2011 UN Climate Change Conference, Durban achieved key breakthroughs: the acceptance of emerging/developing nations to the GHG emissions limit principle; the formal approval of the Green Climate Fund (GCF); and the extension of the Kyoto Protocol (KP). The key outstanding challenges remain: the absence of clear legal status of the 2015 agreement with no additional climate action likely ahead of 2020; the lack of GCF current funding; and the departure of Canada, Japan and Russia from KP commitment. Overall Durban finally achieved a universal framework to peak and cut GHGs and create new alliances driving climate business.
