Document summary
Emerging market countries are attractive for sustainably oriented investors. Economic growth in these countries contributes to reducing poverty and thus to sustainable development, while at the same time promising attractive returns. However, the risks increase in parallel, as the environmental and social downsides of growth such as environmental pollution or precarious working conditions have an increasingly inhibiting effect on economic development. The results of Sarasin sustainability analysis show that, on average, the sustainability profile of companies in emerging economies is below firms in industrialised countries. Nonetheless, there are a number of pioneers who minimise environmental and social risks, exploit opportunities in this area and in the process provide superior return potential.
