Document summary
America remains on the path towards energy self-sufficiency thanks to technological advances in natural gas extraction and petroleum from shale resources. The concept of “energy carry”, defined as the daily dollar amount that measures the improvement of energy balances, is introduced. On the metrics of the natural gas advantage of the US economy relative to Europe/East Asia, growing revenues from increased fuel exports and reduced crude oil import bill, America’s estimated “energy carry” has increased from $70mn to $900mn per day since January 2010, 2.2% of US GDP. US domestic energy prices though are likely to stay depressed.
