European companies plan to use short-term emissions abatement measures plus carbon markets to manage their carbon exposure, according to a survey of S&P’s Rating Services’ portfolio of 500-plus rated corporate issuers. Results indicate European companies increasingly believe EU climate change policies will create risks and opportunities. It also appears respondent companies are now considering their carbon exposure strategy post-2012, when the more stringent Phase III of the EU ETS comes into force and when carbon exposure is likely to really impact on industry. By implementing carbon management strategy now opportunities can be generated for sustainable competitive advantage and company credit worthiness.
