Document summary

In the context of ever rising demand for fossil fuels, natural gas production and consumption are projected to continue to increase in both absolute terms and as a proportion of the fossil fuel mix. With reserves of conventional reserves of oil and gas dwindling, producers are increasingly focusing on unconventional sources such as shale gas, which development usually generates higher environmental and social risks. This report analyses the risks associated with shale gas extraction and outlines how responsible investors can play an important role in decreasing impacts and mitigating related risks by using their leverage to push for best practices.
