The UN has declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests with the aim of raising public awareness of the importance of protecting forests and exploiting them in a sustainable way. Forests play a central role from both an ecological and an economic perspective and are thus faced with various conflicts of interest. A trend is emerging towards treating forests as a separate asset class. A prerequisite for this though is that forests must be managed sustainably in order to make these investments consistent with sustainable and future-orientated developments.
