Surging food prices in 2010 mirroring similar rises with their attendant social unrest in 2008 is the background to the challenges of feeding the peoples of Asia over the coming decades. Population growth, rising incomes, changing diets and rapid urbanisation are key factors. The issues are complex and interrelated but can be broadly categorised as: demand dynamics; supply pressures; impacts both social and environmental and responses, namely price, policy and technology. A disclosure based assessment is provided of the readiness of Asian corporations operating in the food supply chain to meet the coming challenges and opportunities.
