Document summary

In this ground-breaking study, the authors examine whether crowdfunding could offer an effective way for public sector bodies to fund infrastructure. Their report uses case studies from six public sector bodies to explore the economic, legal, political, and technical potential of crowdfunding as an additional form of finance for public sector infrastructure projects.

As well as identifying knowledge barriers, and testing whether crowdfunding could offer better value to the public sector, an assessment is made to determine how the internal capacity required to develop crowdfunding for the public sector can be minimised so that it mirrors that for the PWLB, or via PPP project finance, as common sources of public sector funding.
