In this fascinating peek behind the curtains, the authors review the role of fossil fuel companies' investor relations departments on communication on climate change issues to investors. The authors conclude that IR departments have only been tasked with defending their company against criticism, rather than engaging in strategy. As a result they have taken a reactive and defensive approach rather than a strategic response to the challenge of climate change which has boxed out’ civil society and smaller investors.
