Document summary
Inorganic and organic light emitting diodes (LED and OLED: (O)LED) are expected to structurally change the current lighting landscape in the long-term. A key reason is the disruptive technology as it does not use a gas-based concept but solid-state materials such as semiconductors (for LED) or organic polymers (for OLED), virtually designable for any light application. Moreover it allows greater energy savings, CO2 and mercury emissions. Total LED sales are likely to rise more than four-fold by 2015 and potentially more than eight-fold by 2020.
