Financial Centre Futures Conclave - Bringing Together Representatives of Financial Centres To Build On Our Common Interests

Z/Yen Group, in partnership with the China Development Institute, held a special webclave (online conclave, a private, invitation-only meeting) to bring together representatives of financial centres across the world to discuss areas of common interest on restarting economies, adjusting strategies, and renovating financial centres for the next decade.
Background
Z/Yen Group has conducted research into the competitiveness of financial and commercial centres for many years. As part of its Financial Centre Futures programme, Z/Yen publishes the Global Financial Centres Index, the Global Green Finance Index and the Smart Centres Index.
At a time when the global economy is facing a major shock from the Covid-19 pandemic, financial centres will play an enormous role in assisting recovery, as well as being candidates for recovery themselves. We brought together our financial centre colleagues to share views on the role and future directions of finance and trade.
Format
The online event took place from 08:30 to 10:00 British Summer Time (GMT+1) on Wednesday, 15 July 2020. Financial centres were invited to have two representatives present at the event. The structure of the discussion was:
- Welcome: The Right Honourable The Lord Mayor Of The City Of London, Alderman William Russell
- Setting the Scene: Professor Michael Mainelli, Executive Chairman of the Z/Yen Group and Professor Fan Gang, President, China Development Institute
- Round-Robin Discussion – 3 minutes of key points from each centre:
- Covid-19: What are the most significant changes covid-19 has made to your functioning as a financial centre? How have relations changed with national government or regulators?
- Recovery: Moving forward, what are the two or three most important initiatives you are pursuing? Could other centres support your initiatives in some way?
- Futures: What do you see as the biggest strategic changes ahead? How will you measure the success of your financial centre going forward?
- Open discussion - an opportunity for financial centres to share the challenges that they are facing and to explore ways in which they can learn from and support each other in meeting those challenges.
